Alcohol Can Be Good....

Alcohol can be good…
EXCEPT in your oral health care products……
Alcohol is ethanol (or ethyl alcohol). While it does have some anesthetic and disinfecting properties it also acts as a desiccant, which means that it removes water.
As you'll read further down, alcohol can lead to more serious oral health issues and alcohol mouthwash should be replaced with alcohol free alternatives.

Alcohol can cause several problems such as:
1. BURNING SENSATION IN THE ORAL CAVITY: The "Burn" while we use A MOUTHWASH, we experience is actually a bad thing, especially for chronic bad breath sufferes who use mouthwash many times a day and for people who have been using an alcohol mouthwas for many years.
2. DRY MOUTH: Alcohol by its nature is a desiccant and it will dry the surfaces it comes in contact with.
Some issues associated with dry mouth:
  • Higher risk of fungal infections
  • Dental problems such as cavities, gum disease, bad breath
  • Poor nutrition
  • Poor sleep
  • Problem speaking
  • Difficulty swallowing tablet- or capsule-type medication
3.CHILDREN AND ALCOHOL: Children, specially should not use alcohol mouthwash. The American Acadmy of Pediatrics reports that as little as 30ounces of a mouthwash containing 5% alcohol can be dangerous to an average 22pounds toddler.
4. DENTAL CONCERNS: Alcohol has a tendency to shrink or negatively impact dental resins. If users of an alcohol mouthwash have a lot of dental work, they may be doing more harm than good.

Bottom line :  alcohol free, clear mouthwash is a safer bet.
ALCOHOL-FREE MOUTHWASHES THAT YOU CAN USE:
(very few of these are available at medical stores due to lack of advertisements and awareness)
  • Hexidine: ICPA
  • Perio Wash
  •  Listerine Total Care Zero (This is the only listerine with zero alcohol)
  • Corsodyl Alcohol Free Mouthwash
  • Reach ACT Anti cavity Fluoride Rinse alcohol free for adults
  • Reach ACT Anti-cavity Fluoride Rinses for Kids
  •
  • Biotene Antibacterial Alcohol-Free Mouth Wash which is recommended for people with "dry mouth ."
  • Smart Mouth Alcohol free Mouth Wash
  • Oral B anti plaque Alcohol Free Mouth Wash

Do healthy white teeth give a youthful appearance??

Your smile is the first thing people see when they meet you. It's part of the first impression you make. Healthy, white teeth are the best accessory you can wear. People tend to associate healthy, white teeth with a youthful appearance. They can make you look bright and healthy. And remember: First impressions are lasting.

Just as white, straight teeth convey youth, a smile with crooked, discolored, worn, or missing teeth is associated with an aged look.
 Before

Today, we must make great efforts in order to maintain our teeth for life. Many people are spending a lot of money for dental implants to restore what they once had. The best treatment is to catch things early on: Maintaining what you have is much more cost-effective than repairing what was lost.

A person who keeps his or her own natural teeth healthy for a lifetime is less likely to have other health problems and will live a longer life.
 After

Not too many things can replace a healthy, happy smile. When we look good, we feel good and if our teeth are healthy, pretty and bright, our smile will reflect that same feeling. For the most part, if you feel good about your teeth and how they look, you'll tend to smile bigger making people take notice and when that happens, it creates an image of happiness.

Everyone wants a bright, healthy smile but oral health goes deeper than that. Oral health touches every aspect of our lives but is often taken for granted. Your mouth is a window into the health of your body. It can show signs of nutritional deficiencies or general infection. Systemic diseases, those that affect the entire body, may first become apparent because of mouth lesions or other oral problems.

Keeping a youthful mouth comes down to two simple, proven, and practical steps:

·         Brush twice daily

·         Floss: clean between your teeth once/twice a day with floss or another interdental cleaner

·         Replace your toothbrush every three or four months

·         Eat a balanced diet

·         Limit between-meal snacks.

·         Antimicrobial mouth rinse if recommended

·         See your dentist every six months

Smoking: are you still unaware?

A survey suggests the public are still unaware of the dangers posed by smoking.

in a new survey conducted recently, more than one in four people (28 per cent)

are still unaware that smoking is the leading cause of mouth cancer, a disease that kills

one person every five hours

A lack of knowledge didn’t stop at traditional cigarettes. When questioned about

some alternatives, more than half (57 per cent) thought  shisha

pipes (51 per cent) are safe alternatives to smoking while just under half (48 per cent)

thought smokeless tobacco is a safe substitute.

Smoking and tobacco use is still the leading cause of mouth cancer. According

to the World Health organization, up to half of current users will eventually die of

a tobacco-related illness.

Smoking can also cause a variety of oral health problems including

-tooth staining,

-dental plaque,

-bad breath,

-tooth loss

-gum disease.

A study reveals “on average, smokers lose about 16 years of their life.”

Given the substantial investment in anti-smoking campaigns over the last ten years i would have

hoped for fewer people to be unaware of the risks posed by the habit.

“However, the survey alongside rising cases of mouth cancer shows there is still a

large percentage of the population we must reach out to and educate. If combined

with drinking alcohol to excess, these two habits can raise the rise of developing the

disease by up to 30 times.

“Poor diet and the human papillomavirus (HPV), transmitted via oral sex, are also

risk factors. to ensure early detection - something that can transform survival rates

from 50 per cent to up to 90 per cent - we must all look for ulcers that do not heal

within three weeks, unusual lumps or swellings and red or white patches in the mouth.

our message to everyone is

“if in doubt, get checked out.”

Chewing Ice Can Cause Serious Tooth Damage

With good oral hygiene and proper dental care, your teeth should last a lifetime. But the violent bashing of ice inside your mouth can cause dental emergencies like teeth fractures, cracking and chipping.
Even if you can’t see the damage, chewing ice can:
  • Wear down tooth enamel
  • Increase sensitivity to hot and cold foods
  • Make teeth more vulnerable to decay.
Plus, you run the risk of damaging dental work you’ve had done like veneers and fillings. That could mean a lot of pain—in your mouth and your wallet.

Tip to kick the habit

If you must have something to chew on, we recommend sugar-free gum. And leave the ice in your glass!
